Types of Student Visa in the UK for Indians
The Government of the UK offers three different types of student visa for Indians depending on the type and nature of the course. These types are:
SHORT-TERM STUDENT VISA :
As the name says it all, in a short-term study visa you are eligible to apply for a short-term course in the UK. Courses like, English language course, training course or some research as part of your degree course.
With a short-term study visa you won’t be allowed to study in a state-funded school or work in the UK. Also, you cannot bring any family members during your short course.
GENERAL STUDENT VISA (TIER 4):
Under this, you would be allowed to apply for a general student visa if you are 16 or over and if you have been offered a place on a course. However, there are some additional requirements that you need to fulfil to get this visa, such as:
- You MUST have enough funds so that you can pay for your tuition fees and living costs in the UK.
- The amount may vary depending on the circumstances.
- You should be able to communicate in English language proficiently.
CHILD STUDENT VISA (TIER 4):
People can even apply for a Child student visa (Tier 4). The applicant should be aged between 4-17 years and is willing to study in the UK school. To qualify for this visa, you must

- Details of your passport, which include your name, your date of birth, expiry date and country of issuance. Besides, you also need to attach expired copies of the passport.
- A recent photograph of the applicant
- Copy of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a university approved by UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI).
- Must have scored well in entrance exams like IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, PTE etc.
- Proof of English language proficiency, which could be score of IELTS or any other exam.
- Proof of your funds showing that you have enough financial support to cover your living cost during your stay in the UK.
- Unconditional offer of a place on a course offered by a licensed tier4 sponsor
- Non-EU/ESS/SWISS student may need an ATAS CERTIFICATE
Note:Average tuition fees for studying in the UK is £12,000 per year and you need to maintain minimum of 1200 pounds for each month during your stay in the UK
Document Required For Processing Student Visa To UK
Immigration is very specific and there are strict requirements that you need to produce the documents mentioned below:
- Bank statements (must be no more than 30 days old on the date of your application).
- Building society passbooks
- Letter from the bank.
- Overseas account statements/letters
- Letter from a financial institution regulated by the Financial Services Authority
- Letter confirming an education loan. The education loan must be provided by your national government, their state or regional government, a government-sponsored student loan company or part of an academic or educational loan scheme
- All your documents must be in English. If any of the documents are not in English then translations will be included along with the originals.
- Bachelor Degree Certificate / Provisional Degree Certificate
Note:The funds that you are going to use for maintenance must be in your account for a consecutive period of 28 days. If you will not meet the Home Office requirements, or if the money drops below the required amount even for a single day during 28 days tenure, then your application will be rejected.
